India visa guide
Nepali citizens travel to India without a visa. What ID to carry, when extra permits apply, and how to confirm the current rules.
- No visa required for Nepali citizens
- Travel on a Nepali passport or voter ID card
Under the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Nepali citizens can live, work and travel in India without a visa. For tourism this means you simply book your train, bus or flight and carry valid identification.
Use a valid Nepali passport or a voter ID card for check-in and borders. If a planned stay is for work, study or a long period, or you need a protected or restricted area permit such as parts of the north-east, connect with the Indian authorities in advance because those categories do have separate steps.
We keep this page as plain-language guidance only. Because official rules can change, confirm on the Bureau of Immigration site, or ask our team and we will check it with you.
